Huka XL
On Friday the 25th of November i headed down to Taupo to join Rae and her parents for the Huka mountain bike race held in conjunction with the Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge. by the time i arrived in Taupo i had been up for 14 hours due to a 4am start at work which was not ideal.
Saturday rolled around and Rae and I pedaled down to the start line for the early 7.00am start time. It was blowing a gale and i knew it was going to be a long day when it was hard to make double figured speed on the ride in.
The Gun went off and we were set loose. We all charged up the hill and into the Huka Falls track at the top. there was a small gap to the rider in front of me but with 80km ahead i wasn't to worried. the race crossed under the state highway and into Craters of the moon. about 2minutes into the Craters track i took a wrong turn (the intersection was unmarked) this caused me to loose about 3 minutes to the riders in front and i was forced to play catch up.
i got through some traffic and picked up a few spots when i sore some riders appear from a different track and jump the tree in front of me. it turns out that they had taken a wrong turn also which had severely frustrated them. we climbed up a steep hill in the howling wind and i remember thinking "man if a tree falls down here I'm a gonner" sure enough up the top of a hill a tree fell down, missing me by about 30 seconds. i thought "jeez some one could die here!!!"
when i got to the car park i discovered that the race had been called off due to the high wind. Trees had apparently been falling all over the place missing some riders by feet.
the option was to continue riding the track to the Aratiatia dam as a social ride, or go straight back to the race village. Rae and I rode to the Damm and back with a few friends as we thought the $100.50 entry fee might as well be utilised in some way or another.
All in all it was a good day on the bike. the legs didn't feel as good as they had the week before but i still felt much stronger - a good sign of things to come.
Id like to Congratulate Andrew Morrison on a very commendable 320km cycle around lake Taupo in extremely trying conditions. Very well done, and thank you to you and Helen for supplying us with somewhere to stay :)

Auckland Mountain Bike Champs Round 4
On Saturday Rae and I drove up to Auckland for the Forth round of the Auckland Mountain bike Champs held in Riverhead. We rode the track on saturday afternoon and were very excited to race. After we rode the track on saturday we headed to the Retief's house as they were putting us up for the night.
sunday morning arrived and we set out to the track, I was feeling dangerous, i had butterflys and was amping to go. I havnt felt like that in years so just wanted to get started.
we were to do three laps of the 11km course, the course was very challenging with a climb maxing at 41% filled with ruts and slippery clay.
i started the first lap and didnt have the best start around, But the legs felt good so i decided to bide my time and sat back and watched the other rides make mistakes and i picked them off one by one. not realising how far up the field i was i pressed on i search of more riders to pass. half way through the first lap i felt my shoe do something funny and it bagan to float around on the pedal i let up on the gas a little in order to keep my shoe from getting worse. i instantly knew what had happended but pushed on any way. i rode the rest of the race with Matt josteling for 3rd and 4th position.
on the last lap my shoe got really loose and i had to back off the gas abit more as i thought my shoe was about to completely come off the pedal. But still managed to stay incontact with matt. unfortunatly the half attached cleat prevented my from attempting a last minute attack to try for 3rd place but i finished in 4th place.
Besides the mechanical i was stoked with my forth place, i had great legs all day and i felt great technically. I came away from the race full of motivation and egar for the next one.
A Huge Thank you to the Retief's for letting us stay on Saturday night.

Summerhill Monday Night Series
Well what busy few months it has been.
last Saturday Rae and I moved out of Auckland for good we spent most of Friday and most of Saturday morning packing our stuff before my dad and Brother Taylor came up to help us shift out. 3 full cars and a full trailer later and we were on our way down to Tauranga to set up camp at my mums house. Next year we will be based in Rotorua for which we are ver ecited.
The move down to Tauranga went well and we were able to rip into some serious training.
Monday rolled around and we decided to do a MTB race up at Summerhill. the race was to be an hour long with the aim to do as many laps as possible during the hour.
Summerhill is about 25-30minutes ride from home so with the race due to start at 6.30 we thought leaving at 5.45 would leave us plenty of time to enter and get ready for the race. as it was we ended up leaving a bit late at around 5.55 so we had to time trial out to the track to get there on time.
we arrived at Summerhill at around 6.20 to find that the race started early and we were about 3 minutes late. We raced off to make up for lost time and quickly started reeling in people. The race was super fun, the track was real flowy and the TREK SUPERFLY AL100 bike i borrowed from Cycle Obsession earlier that day was an awesome ride.
By the end of the race i had worked my way back up to 4th place overall and less than 1 minute off the winner Kris Snow. Rae worked her way back to first female and ended up winning by a lap.
all in all a great day out in the bike. i thoroughly enjoyed the racing and will defiantly be racing again tonight

Recent Happenings
OH DEAR once again i have been slack and forgot to update my site so here it goes
over the last few months i have been rather busy with long hours at work and study thrown in the mix. so needless to say along with training i have been quite flat out!!!
so since my last update i have had 3 races including a brief return to road racing!!!
Auckland Half distance road cycling championships.
this was my first race back on the road in years. the race was 50km long and very hill. the weather was horrible. intermittent rain with a cold southerly icy blast.. now i know you don't want to hear about a road race so ill give you the short version. it was hard and fast as i hadn't raced a road race in years, attacks were going down left right and center. one guy crashed (by himself) into a drain....... how i do not know. but anyway i came away with the win after leaving my competition on my dust. So i am now Auckland U23 half distance champion haha.
Karioi Classic
this is the second time this race has been run and with a spectacular day in store for us, the day was sure to be a highly enjoyable one.
I had decided to enter the singles peed category for two reasons. 1 i couldn't be bothered converting my hard tail back to a geared bike and 2 my bike weighed 7.5kg!!!!!!
the race started and i quickly found that on the flat my 32-16 gearing was much to easy and i pondered whether or not i made the right gear selection even after a last hour gear change from a 17 to a 16 tooth chain ring. i was quickly dropped as speeds reached up to 40kph as my legs just couldn't spin that fast. THEN we hit the hill and i was off. i had the perfect gearing and started passing the geared riders like they were going backwards! i motored past riders and looked back at them just to see the disgust on there faces as they were being passed by a single speeder - it was awesome!! i found my rhythm and powered on picking up some of the top riders along the way and then blowing them into my single speed dust of awesomeness. eventually i found myself in no mans land with one other, between the very front bunch of hard core roadies and the disgusted individuals behind me. together myself and a fellow competitor (who's name i can not remember as i have left this report far to late) worked well. me pulling on the uphills and him on the downhill. eventually we picked up two more riders before dropping them.
the views were spectacular high up on a hill looking straight out at the sea.
6km from the end we picked up a cyclocross rider who had popped from the front group he than sat on as as me motored across the last km or so of kaikoia grass. then right at the end with 50 meters to go her attacked us. after we had pulled him all that way he attacked us. I could not believe it! racing is racing but that was appalling sportsmanship as he knew he had the larger gears and could easily out sprint us if needed yet sat on into the head wind all the way back. i let the other guy have line honours before me as he had done all the hard work back to the finish line for me as we were going to fast for me to pedal.
So results. i ended up taking out the single speed grade only 5min from the overall winner Sheldon who is training up for the tour of southland. for winning i won a two night stay in a luxury lodge in national park.
Rae won the overall woman's grade beating the course record by an impressive 10 minutes and picked up a bag of trade aid goodies for her efforts. all in all it was a spectacularly enjoyable day and a must for next year!!
Woodhill single speed Sundays
what a cool race. about an hour and a half long with excellent combinations a beer or non alcoholic short cut and cool tracks. not much to report on from this race as more of a fun event, but i ended up second with a good jostle with Matt Andrew from Whangarei for first place during all but the last lap.
Unfortunately there are people that think cheating is acceptable and going into the final beer short cut i was neck a neck with another rider. i stopped to grab my non alcoholic beverage and he grabbed his and kept riding whilst drinking it. therefore crossing the finish line whilst drinking. needless to say he bet me across the line as he was multi tasking thus making me 3rd. the rules are that when you grab the beverage you need to stop to drink it. He kept riding. i actually out drank him to and nearly bet him across the finish line. he than had the cheek to try to congratulate me and gestured his and, he got the response. i don't shake the hands of cheaters from me .i protested him out of unfair sportsman ship to which he was disqualified. all in all a great day on the bike except for the actions of one person.
Endura Auckland Mountain Bike Champs
Today i decided to use my full suspension as she hadn't had an outing in awhile. the course was tough with a lot of taxing trails. the thing about racing at woodhill is that its always deceptively hard, you hardly ever get a rest which soon wears you down your always on the gas and a downhill is only 1minute long at the most. i had a good first lap but got clipped at the start which sent me back a little bit. so was playing catch up from the start. as i said first lap was good but i struggled with no legs on the second lap. and once again witnessed my fair share of cheating with people taking shortcuts that cut minutes off their lap times. this is reflected in the results with some peoples average laps being around 37minutes then out of know where a 27minute lap pops up in the middle of there race.......... on the second lap i was pretty much a gonner and when i worked out that the reason i had not caught anybody on the first lap was because a lot of the front riders had been taking substantial shortcuts whilst others like myself and Matt Andrew race a fair race. now I'm not a sore loser like it may sound, but a refuse to race people that cheat to win. the impact at the lower end of the field with short cuts is not so bad but when to riders at the top end are taking short cuts and shaving minutes off there time there is something not on there. these people should know better especially when the top riders are so close together. the onus is upon the rider to race a fair race and to be honest i don't know how people can feel satisfied with a race when they are being dishonest.
so i feel that results for this race were irrelevant.
The event however was exceptionally well run with a small hick up in the lap length not fazing many people. after all we are there to enjoy the forest. i think certain organisations could take a leaf out of Tim Farmers book in how to run an event. There was over 140 racers there which is incredible for a simple Auckland Race!! Cudos to you Tim and the Auckland Mountain bike club
Day Night Thriller
once again i found myself lined up at the start of the day night thriller again racing for Cycle Obsession in the bike shop category. the track was a little different from last year as most of the trees were gone. our team raced really well and we came away with the win, and the cycle obsession 2 team ended up 2nd an excellent result for our two teams every body race hard and well!!
there not to much to report from the DNT as I'm sure most of you were there.
Rae did her first 6hr solo and ended up 2nd place. I'm very proud of her being here first ride over 5hours!! for more info on her race go to http://www.raewynmorrison.blogspot.com/
hope you all are excited for day light savings. i personally cant wait to be able to ride in daylight after work!!!
See you out on the trails

Winter Training Blues
The winter solstice has been and gone and things will slowly begin to get warmer, the nights shorter and with that the training will increase.
But while we are still in winters grasp we'll have to make do with what we have. lately i have been working flat out trying to make head way into what seems to be my endless struggle to save some money!! working close to 60 hours a week doesn't leave much time for weekly living, let alone bike riding.
We now have a wind trainer and rollers at home which allows some reprieve from winter icy blasts and seemingly endless nights caused by leaving for work in the dark traveling the thirty odd minutes in the dark by car, and then returning home at the end of a 12hr day in the pitch black again.
Welcome to the real world some non-cyclists say, but i put it to them - you try and work a sixty hr week and on top of that try to train for thirteen hours a week. funnily enough i have decided to pursue a career in civil engineering via extramural study which will surely take up some more of my already rationed time.
Throughout these few months or so i have really come to understand what some of NZs older elite mountain bike fraternity have gone through in years or decades past. I have a lot of respect for the likes of John Hume, and more recently Mikey, Stu and Cabin for holding down jobs and paying there way through the sport we all love off thier own backs!!
So what is this all about?
I put it to some of the up and comers and even some of the more elite riders in our sport. Do not take for granted the amount of support that you receive. Make sure you thank your Supporters regularly, Remember that without them its a bloody lot harder to get where you are today.
Happy Trails everyone. see you out there

Hard n up single speed 12hr relay
On Saturday the 9th of April Rae and I headed down to Ngaruwahia for the inaugural “Hard n up single speed 12hr relay” on the infamously gruelling black stump mountain bike track. We were entered as part of the GEON sprocket rockets team which consisted of Raewyn Morrison, Shaun See, Janine .........., and myself. The race kicked off at 9am. It was a 7.5km course with over 270 vertical meters of climbing per lap. Oddly enough the race started with a long farm track downhill to the bottom of the course which had Rae hitting 60kph! Then grovel back up the hill to the event village.
I started us off and soon found that the 32x17 gear ratio I had on was far, far, to hard for the climb – whilst not overly steep, the continuous strain of pushing a large gear was a sure fire way to blow the legs by the end of the 1st lap let alone the 5 laps that followed.
The thing about single speed races is that the lack of gears makes for an excellent leveller, due to the fact that you can’t have a hard gear on for pedalling downhill, yet need a gear hard enough not to spin out to fast on the flat, and a gear easy enough to pedal up the hill. With a cluster on the bike you have the pleasure of choosing what gear/s will be best suited for every particular part of the track. Where as a single speed you just have to make do with what you have got. Anyway I ended up coming off the first lap in 2nd place largely due to the difficult gear I had chosen. After I finished my lap I quickly went about finding an easier gear and as luck would have it a team mate was carrying a spare 19 tooth cog which turned out to be almost perfect for the track.
So 11.5 hours later the race finished and we ended up in 2nd place overall and winning the mixed teams grade. It was a fantastic race, very well run, and although there were not the large numbers the event organisers were hoping for it still had a great atmosphere our entire team loved it. This event had a few Quirky parts to it. Including 2 bonus laps for completing two laps in underwear with a maximum of two bonus laps awarded. We were also provided with an amazing free dinner – fresh lamb and wild boar roasts on the spit with salad and fresh potatoes, it was amazing defiantly something you don’t get at any ordinary race!!
I really enjoyed the race and feel as though I am able to make a full comeback to racing and training now which I am stoked about. So I have been lapping up the miles in my new home of Auckland sneaking in lots of hill work. I am really looking forward to making a return to the top end again
BRING IT ON!!!
